Abstract:
Studying Bogdanov-Takens (B-T) bifurcation in nonlinear dynamical systems is important, and the main difficulty in the analysis comes from the computation of the normal form, in particular for higher-codimension B-T bifurcations. In this talk, we first give a brief introduction on B-T bifurcation, with attention paid to the classical "6-step" transformation approach for codimension-3 B-T bifurcation. Then, we present a "1-step" transformation approach for higher-codimension B-T bifurcation, based on the simplest normal form (SNF) theory. A comparison on the advantages and disadvantages of these two methods is given, with physical examples to illustrate applications. Finally, the "swell" problem in the symbolic computation will be briefly discussed.

Dr. Pei Yu is currently a Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Western University, Canada. He received his B.Sc. degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and MSc and PhD degrees from University of Waterloo. Professor Yu's main research interests include nonlinear and chaotic dynamical systems, stability and bifurcation, computation of differential equations, biological mathematics and applications to physical and engineering systems. He (as an author or a co-author) has published 3 monographs, over 230 refereed journal articles.
