In 1984, the Department of Journalism was established in Zhengzhou University . In 1993, it was approved as a master's degree in journalism and it was approved as a master's degree in communication in 2000 . In June 2004, the Journalism Department of Zhengzhou University was reformed into the School of Journalism and Communication. In June 2014, Xinhua News Agency signed a contract with Zhengzhou University to build Mu Qing Research Center. In December 2014, the Propaganda Department of Henan Provincial Party Committee signed a contract with Zhengzhou University to jointly build the School of Journalism and Communication. In 2016, the College was approved as a doctoral program in "Public Communication" in two disciplines, a first-class doctoral program in journalism and communication in 2018, and a postdoctoral research mobile station in journalism and communication in 2019.
There are 68 faculty members in the college. There are 12 professors and 25 associate professors among full-time teachers. There are 49 teachers with doctoral degrees. There are six academic institutions in the college, including Xinhua News Agency-Mu Qing Research Center of Zhengzhou University, Zhongyuan Media Research Institute, Media Development Research Center of Zhengzhou University, Cultural Industry Research Center of Zhengzhou University, New Media Communication Research Institute and Film &Television Creation and Research Center of Zhengzhou University. Since its establishment in 2004, the college has undertaken 32 national social science fund projects and other national scientific research projects, including 3 major projects and 4 key projects; more than 60 provincial and ministerial-level projects were taken, such as humanities and social science research projects of the Ministry of Education, major social science planning projects in Henan Province and soft science projects in Henan Province.
The college has a complete discipline system and professional structure. The personnel training system covers three levels: doctoral, master and undergraduate. Among them, the first-class doctoral program in journalism and communication consists of four directions: new media public communication, journalism, communication and audio-visual culture communication; The first-level master's degree program consists of two second-level master's degree programs of journalism and communication, and two types of full-time and part-time professional master's degree programs of journalism and communication. In 2008, 2012 and 2017, the discipline of journalism and communication was funded by the construction of first-class key disciplines in Henan Province for three consecutive times; In 2015, the public communication of new media was funded by the platform of advantageous disciplines in Henan Province; In 2017, in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation, the discipline of journalism and communication was rated as "B", ranking 17th in the ranking of journalism and communication disciplines in national universities.
The college offers four undergraduate majors: journalism, advertising, radio and television, network and new media. In 2007, journalism major was selected as the first batch of characteristic specialty construction sites of the Ministry of Education. Journalism and advertising were selected as the first and second batch of national first-class undergraduate specialty construction sites respectively. On the basis of four majors, the college has set up journalism department, advertising department, radio and television department, network and new media department, and jointly established the "Excellent Journalism" talent experimental class-Mu Qing Journalism Experimental Class with Xinhua News Agency and Henan Provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department. The college is the chairman and secretary-general unit of the Teaching Steering Committee of Journalism and Communication Major in Colleges and Universities of Henan Province, and a member unit of the Teaching Steering Committee of Journalism and Communication Major in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education.
The college has complete experimental and practical teaching conditions. The Omnimedia Experimental Teaching Center of Zhengzhou University, an experimental teaching demonstration center of colleges and universities in Henan Province, has a building area of 1,600 square meters and fixed assets of more than 20 million yuan. There are 10 basic teaching laboratories and a national virtual simulation experimental teaching project. The auxiliary teaching equipment such as cameras, video cameras and drones is perfect, and it has a high level of experimental training and production capacity of media programs.
The College has signed cooperation agreements with Xinhua News Agency Henan Branch, People's Daily Henan Branch, Henan Daily Newspaper Group, Henan Radio and Television Station and other media units on off-campus training bases. Among them, Zhengzhou University-Henan Daily Newspaper Group Base is a joint training base for graduate students in Henan Province; "Zhengzhou University-Henan TV Station College Students Practice Training Base" has been recognized by the Provincial Department of Education as the off-campus practice education base for undergraduate students in Henan Province.
In terms of international cooperation, the College has established cooperation projects such as scientific research and teacher-student exchanges with universities in Russia, the United States, Germany, Britain, South Korea, Japan, Australia and other countries, and has jointly trained double master's programs with universities such as Hong Kong Baptist University and City University of Hong Kong; Also it has accepted international students at undergraduate, master's, doctoral levels .
Over the past 40 years, the college has trained more than 10,000 talents of various types for the country and society, and the scale of running a school has maintained a steady growth trend. At present, there are more than 1,100 undergraduates, more than 400 postgraduates and more than 30 doctoral students. The one-time postgraduate entrance examination rate of undergraduate graduates is about 40%.
