On May 10, the final of the 2023 Postgraduate Debate Competition was held at the Law School Moot Court on the main campus of Zhengzhou University. The debating team consisting of Cui Bowen, Ding Jianing, Wang Baihan, Wang Jingqi and Wang Xuechun, postgraduates of our school, won the championship.

Before that, a total of 28 teams from all over the university had been competing fiercely for two months. Our debating team prepared hard for the competition and perfected their arguments, materials and debating details, and successfully advanced to the championship with their outstanding performance.

In the final round, our School and the School of Business debated on the question of whether the celebrity status of scholars is conducive to academic communication. Our School was the opposing side, debating on "the celebrityization of scholars is not conducive to academic communication". In the argument and questioning session, both sides debated on the topics of "whether knowledge dissemination is equal to academic dissemination" and "whether the number of views is equal to academic dissemination", and the atmosphere was getting tense and anxious. Our debaters were quick-witted, logical and argued their arguments with great vigour, explaining their arguments to the best of their ability. In the concluding debate, our debaters made the point that fragmentation and entertainment are contrary to the depth of academia, and concluded with the proposition "Does celebrity make the world more civilised or more superficial", which was thought-provoking.

The School of Journalism and Communication's debate team won the championship after the judges' deliberations. Cui Bowen, the fourth debater of the team, was awarded the title of "Best Debater" and Fang Shu, a postgraduate student of the School, was awarded the title of "Excellent Chairman" for his excellent performance as the chairman of the debate.

Language is a mapping of ideas. In this year's debate, our debating team quoted and argued, carrying forward the spirit of hard work, unity and excellence, fully demonstrating the positive and vigorous youthful style of our students. (Text: Shi Yi He)
